The word jinn, al jaan, al jinna is written twenty nine times in the Quran.
Jinn, in Arabic language, literally means “hidden from sight” and is derived from the Arabic root j’n’n pronounced as jann-junn meaning “to hide” or “be hidden”.
While, the other words which are derived from this root are majnun ‘mad’ (one whose intellect is hidden), junuun ‘madness’, and janin, ’embryo, fetus’ (‘hidden inside the womb’).
Al Jawhari (the author of Al-Sihaah al hakeem; page 19) explains: “Al-jann is the father of the jinn, the plural of which is jeenaan”. All of that which is concealed from you is Junna‘anka (concealed from you). Janna al-layl means the darkness of the night. Al-jaan is the plural of Al-Jinn. Jannahu al-layl means the night covered him.
These are the root meaning of the word Jinn. This material above is extracted from the works of Ashibly and Al-Jawhari. The grave and shroud is called jenanan because cover the dead.
The heart is called jeenan because it concealed in the chest
The sprit is called jananan because the body conceals it.
And thus we have made for every prophet an enemy, devils from mankind and jinn.
Allah Says, “If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Quran, they could not produce the like of it even if they were to each other’s assistants.(17:88)
Some jinn were directed to the Prophet. [mention, O Muhammad], when we directed to you a few of the jinn, listening to the Quran. And when they attended it, they said, “Listen quietly.” And when it was concluded, they went back to their people as Warner’s.
1. For the sake of revenge: When Jinn possess a human for revenge, it is mostly because the human has inflicted harm to it, and the Jinn believe harm was intentional. The ways in which a human can cause harm to the jinn.
Here are some commonly construed reasons for Jinn to possess a human for revenge:
Pouring boiling water: It is believed; boiling water can cause harm or can cause death to the jinn. For instance, when a person pours boiling water in the toilet or in the lavatory while cleaning, without saying Bismillah, a Jinn maybe sleeping there, perhaps a baby of Jinn, or a young jinn. They might get killed or harmed, so the family or their tribe will want to take revenge.
Urinating in places where Jinn may reside or resting: ideally, Jinn reside in places where human beings do not frequently visit, and start to take control or feel association with these areas and make them their homes. For example, insect holes, caves, forests or woodlands.
If a Jinn is sleeping or sitting with his family under a tree, and a human comes and urinates there unknowingly, and he doesn’t recite Bismillah beforehand, the jinn can possess him, since they feel that he has caused them harm intentionally, so the effect will be that they will cause him harm in return.
I have experienced this happen when a brother came to me, I recited Ruqyah for him, after revealing itself, and Jinn had explained that he had taken control of this person because of his behaviour in a park.
Harming animals possessed by Jinn: Jinn sometimes take the form of animals and can live in animals, particularly black animals. When a person harms an animal, predominantly at night, these can be jinn and they can harm you back.
Shaykh al-Islam, Ibn Taymiyyah, said: The jinn may appear in human and animal form, so they may appear as snakes and scorpions etc., or in the form of camels, cattle, sheep, horses, mules and donkeys, or in the form of birds, or in the form of humans, as the Shaytaan came to Quraysh in the form of Suraaqah ibn Maalik ibn Ju’sham when they wanted to set out for Badr. (Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 19/44.)
According to the Prophet ﷺ, if a snake enters your home, it may be a jinn, and so you must give it the time and option to leave, for 3 days and if it still refuses then kill it as it is Shaytaan. Avoid black cats and dogs. “…There are in Medina jinns who have accepted Islam, so when you see any one of them, pronounce a warning to it for three days, and if they appear before you after that, then kill it for that is a devil.” (Book #026, Hadith #5557)
Shouting, wailing, singing or reciting Quran in the toilet: This is something I had experienced. A brother, who came to me for Ruqyah, was seen speaking to himself in the toilet. Gradually, he got into conversation with the Shayateen, believing he was stronger than them, and they wouldn’t do anything to him. Then Jinn possessed him, and of course blame was on him because he was the one who told the jinn to present themselves.
Jumping from a high place without saying Bismillah: When a person says Bismillah, before doing any act, the jinn can hear it, and they will not disregard it. Sometimes jinn are arrogant in nature, so it doesn’t matter to them if they see you, they think you can see them, but deep down they know you cannot.
In return they let you harm them, bump into or touch them and then they will touch you back. That evening you may not sleep all night, tossing and turning but when they have had enough, they will return to their family – if they don’t like to possess humans, they want to live freely in the wilderness, travel and settle the way they desire. While there are some jinn, that want to live a material life, and to possess a human and that’s when they enter them.
1.Throwing stones or objects without saying Bismillah: When a person throws something it can hit and can harm the jinn unintentionally. One should always start with Bismillah before throwing. Moreover, reading books on magic, and calling upon the jinn to present them. It may cause great harm.
2. Indirect Revenge: It only happens when a person is doing their Adhkaar, reciting Quran, staying abstaining from haram to the best of their ability and is dutiful to Allah (SWT), the jinn does not have any means to attack the intended person, except through those closest to them, for example the children or spouse etc.
3. One who turns away from the remembrance of Allah: A jinn will coerce a human who is neglectful in the remembrance of Allah (swt). We have to remember the jinn are not without intelligence, they happen to have intellect.
They will plan and wait until a person is exposed or if another member of the family is exposed. One must always be calling upon Allah (swt) to help and protect them, which is why the remembrance of Allah is important as this does not submit a person to such vigilance on the part of the attacking jinn.
And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the most merciful, we appoint for him a devil and he is to him a companion (43:36).
4. Lustful desire: Al Jinn al Ashiq is a age old expression or believe.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said the possession of man by jinn can be out of sexual desire, evil notions, or even love just as it is with humans which is Fahsha’a, i.e. immorality and bad conduct which is forbidden, that is if the two have agreed on the act. However if only the jinn is doing this out of their will it is oppression. The one who is committing this crime must be informed of there actions and they will be judged according to Allah and His messenger’s laws which were sent for man and jinn.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said taking pleasure in something or someone is to get what they want from the person or thing as what they wish or desire. This falls under all types of pleasure. The jinn will bring thing for them to please man , an image or money, take revenge on someone through murder, and in return they require man to obey the jinn by making them do acts of shirk, such as sujood to the jinn or another object or taking pleasure in them.
And [mention, O Muhammad], the Day when He will gather them together [and say], “O company of jinn, you have [misled] many of mankind.” And their allies among mankind will say, “Our Lord, some of us made use of others, and we have [now] reached our term, which you appointed for us.” He will say, “The Fire is your residence, wherein you will abide eternally, except for what Allah wills. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing.”
5. Sihr: The jinn accompanies the one who has been bewitched to complete his goal. A person who visits a Sahir can also be possessed.
6. Ayn A Shaytaan will enter a person body through the path of the evil eye, from the Nafs of the one who has given the eye. While, he Shaytaan will see this channel from the person who gives the evil eye, through resentment or greed, and will enter the person’s body through this channel.
7. Zaar: Ideally, Zaar is a trance ceremony that uses drumming and dancing to treat sickness, with attention to be caused by a demon, it is prohibited in Islam dubbed as pagan practice.
Ruqyah is a practice in Islam that involves the recitation of specific verses from the Qur’an and the seeking of refuge and supplication to God as a means of treating physical and spiritual ailments.
